Cheese boosts mood and health—but only in moderation, experts warn

Cheese can be a nutritious part of a balanced diet, according to Antonina Starodubova, Moscow’s chief dietitian. She highlighted its benefits but also warned against overconsumption due to its high fat, salt, and calorie content. Starodubova explained that cheese provides essential nutrients, including dairy fats, high-quality protein, and minerals like calcium and phosphorus. It also contains vitamins A and B2, along with key amino acids such as lysine, methionine, and tryptophan.

Tryptophan, in particular, plays a crucial role in serotonin production, which can improve mood. Moderate cheese intake may even help stabilise emotions and lower the risk of burnout. However, the dietitian advised eating no more than 20-30 grams at a time. Daily consumption is discouraged because of its saturated fat, sodium, and energy density.

Cheese can support health when included in a varied diet, provided there are no medical restrictions. Portion control and frequency remain important to avoid excess fat, salt, and calories. The recommendations aim to balance its nutritional advantages with potential risks.
