Cebu's First Clinic of Competence for Diabetes Care Sets New Standard
The University of Cebu Medical Center's Diabetes and Nutrition Center (DNC) has become the first in the Philippines to earn the title of Clinic of Competence. The recognition, awarded by the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc. (PCDEF), marks a major milestone for diabetes care in the country. No other hospital or clinic had previously achieved this certification by 2025. The DNC was founded in 2016 with the goal of establishing UCMed as a leading centre for diabetes treatment. Over nearly a decade, it has provided diabetes self-management education, counselling, and nutritional guidance to patients. Its services focus on affordable, evidence-based care for those managing the condition.
On November 11, 2025, Dr. April Melody Abcede, the DNC's unit head, received the official recognition from PCDEF president Dr. Augusto D. Litonjua. The award confirms that the centre meets the foundation's strict standards for diabetes education and patient support. It also highlights the expertise of UCMed's multi-disciplinary team. UCMed is now one of only two hospitals in Cebu to hold this distinction. The achievement reinforces its position as a key provider of diabetes management and education in the Visayas region. Medical Director Dr. Armando V. Tan described the recognition as a commitment to delivering compassionate, high-quality care for every patient.
The certification motivates UCMed to further enhance its DNC services. Patients in the region now have access to a nationally recognised centre for diabetes care. The clinic's focus remains on improving outcomes through education, affordability, and dedicated medical support.
