Catholic leaders denounce U.S. immigration policies as 'moral theft' at landmark conference
A conference on migration policy, held on March 24, 2023, brought together Catholic leaders to discuss immigration through the lens of Catholic social teaching. Organised by Jesuit Refugee Service/USA and the Center for Migration Studies of New York, the event featured strong criticism of recent U.S. policies, including mass deportations and funding cuts to refugee programmes. Cardinal Robert McElroy, the newly appointed archbishop of Washington, was among the key speakers addressing these concerns. Cardinal McElroy condemned the suspension of USAID funding for refugee resettlement as 'moral theft,' arguing it violated Catholic principles of justice and mercy. He also spoke against mass deportations, warning that such actions spread fear among undocumented families and undermine human dignity.
The conference examined ongoing legal disputes over the U.S. government’s decision to end a contract with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ refugee resettlement programme. Participants debated two possible directions for immigration policy: one focused on border security combined with a generous asylum system, and another characterised by harsh enforcement against undocumented migrants. Cardinal McElroy acknowledged a nation’s right to control its borders but insisted policies must balance security with compassion. He tied the disregard for migrant dignity to a broader 'throwaway culture' that also endangers the unborn and elderly. Cardinal Fabio Baggio of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development joined the discussions virtually. He also took part in a solidarity event for migrants in El Paso, Texas, reinforcing the Church’s call for humane immigration reforms.
The conference highlighted deep concerns over U.S. immigration policies, particularly the impact of funding cuts and deportations on vulnerable communities. Catholic leaders reiterated the need for policies that uphold both border security and human dignity, framing the debate within the Church’s social teachings.
