Burjeel Hospital Swaps VAT Refunds for Health Screenings in Bold Anti-Tobacco Campaign
Burjeel Hospital has launched a VAT Refund Counter in Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi, as part of a bold public health campaign. Running from May 31 to June 6, 2026, the initiative transforms a typical retail experience into an interactive health intervention. Instead of cash refunds, visitors receive personalised health insights designed to highlight the risks of tobacco and nicotine use. The activation aligns with the World Health Organization’s 2026 theme for World No Tobacco Day: Unmasking the Appeal. Open daily from 10am to 10pm, the counter mimics a retail environment but replaces financial transactions with health screenings. Participants undergo basic checks and leave with a receipt detailing their health data rather than a monetary refund.
This approach builds on Burjeel Hospital’s previous public health efforts. In 2025, their Smokers Lounge campaign drew over 400,000 views and more than 13,000 engagements. The new initiative extends the conversation beyond hospital walls, placing it directly in a consumer setting where tobacco products are often marketed. The counter also connects participants to follow-up care pathways through Burjeel Hospital. By using retail-style engagement, the campaign aims to expose the hidden dangers of nicotine addiction in a way that feels familiar and accessible.
The VAT Refund Counter remains open until June 6, offering free health screenings and tailored feedback. Burjeel Hospital’s strategy shifts the focus from financial incentives to personal health awareness. Those who visit can also access further support through the hospital’s care programmes.
