Boy, 5, dies after inhaling helium from a party balloon at home

A five-year-old boy died in June 2022 after inhaling helium from a balloon at home. Karlton Noah Donaghey suffered severe brain damage due to oxygen deprivation and passed away six days later. His family is now warning others about the hidden dangers of helium-filled balloons.

On 23 June 2022, Karlton was playing at home when he inhaled helium from a balloon. His mother later found him unconscious after he went inside to use the bathroom. His sister Kaitlin immediately performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but Karlton remained in critical condition.

Despite medical efforts, the oxygen loss caused irreversible brain damage. He died on 29 June, just six days after the incident. The balloon had been cut to prevent a choking hazard, yet the helium itself proved fatal. Helium can displace oxygen in the lungs within seconds, leading to unconsciousness, brain injury, or death by asphyxiation. While no official German statistics track such cases, the risks are well-documented. Kaitlin Donaghey now urges parents to avoid helium balloons entirely. Instead, she recommends using air-filled alternatives as a safer choice.

Karlton's death highlights the severe risks of helium inhalation, even from common party balloons. His family's warning comes as a direct call for greater awareness among parents. Air-filled balloons are now promoted as a simple, life-saving alternative.
