Bill Guerin's NHL journey: From Stanley Cups to stress-tracking GM

Bill Guerin has spent decades in hockey—as a player, an executive, and now as general manager of the Minnesota Wild. His career includes two Stanley Cup wins, Olympic medals, and over 1,200 NHL games. Even now, high-pressure moments still push his stress levels to the limit.

Off the ice, he tracks his health with an Oura ring, monitoring everything from sleep to heart rate during critical games. Guerin’s playing career stretched from 1991 to 2010, covering 1,263 NHL games across eight teams. He scored 429 goals and added 427 assists, totalling 856 points. His biggest successes came in 1995 and 2009, when he lifted the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins.

On the international stage, he helped the U.S. win the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. He also competed in four Olympics, earning a silver medal in 2002. But the pressure of those moments stayed with him long after retirement.

As general manager of the Minnesota Wild, Guerin still feels the strain of high-stakes games. During the 2022 Olympic gold medal match on February 22, his Oura ring recorded 'stressed' levels for seven hours and 45 minutes. His heart rate averaged over 100 beats per minute, spiking near 140 at key moments. He later admitted that, once a game starts, he has no control—only stress.

The Wild currently sit third in the Central Division, tied for third overall in the NHL. Guerin continues to rely on his Oura ring to manage stress and sleep, ensuring he stays sharp through the season and playoffs. Guerin’s career spans championships, Olympic podiums, and front-office leadership. His health data reveals how deeply he still invests in the game, even from the stands. For now, the Wild remain in contention, and his focus stays on balancing performance with well-being.
