Bhiwandi's IGM Hospital exposed: Power failure, stalled construction endanger patients
A surprise inspection at IGM Hospital in Bhiwandi on May 23 uncovered serious issues, including a complete power failure and stalled construction. MP Suresh Mhatre led the visit, revealing that patients—even those in the ICU—were left without electricity despite the hospital having a backup generator. During the inspection, Mhatre found the hospital operating in total darkness. The backup generator, meant to provide emergency power, was reportedly non-functional. This left critical areas, including the ICU, without electricity for an extended period.
The visit also exposed delays in the 'Mother and Child Care Hospital' project. Though the contractor had already missed the agreed deadline, construction remained unfinished. Progress was far slower than earlier reports had suggested. MP Balya Mama sharply criticised the hospital’s administration, warning that those responsible would face strict consequences. Hospital superintendent Madhavi Pandhare’s responses during the inspection raised further concerns about accountability within the institution. IGM Hospital has previously faced criticism for inadequate patient facilities and alleged negligence in healthcare services. In response to the latest findings, Mhatre announced plans to meet Maharashtra’s Chief Minister to address the hospital’s infrastructure problems and mismanagement claims.
The inspection highlighted ongoing failures in power supply, construction delays, and patient care at IGM Hospital. Officials now face pressure to resolve these issues, with calls for accountability and immediate improvements to prevent further risks to patients.
