Berlin's Winter Relief Efforts Strain Under Record Demand for Shelter and Aid
Berlin's aid organisations faced high demand during the winter's cold relief season. Emergency services, including cold weather buses and outreach vans, provided critical support to thousands in need. Both shelter spaces and essential supplies were stretched to capacity.
The Berlin City Mission's cold weather buses responded to 2,550 calls over the winter. Their teams encountered around 3,780 people requiring assistance. Supplies distributed included 600 sleeping bags, 130 blankets, and over 260 items of clothing.
The German Red Cross (DRK) outreach van also saw a sharp rise in demand. Calls nearly doubled, reaching 1,872 compared to 955 the previous season. DRK teams recorded 1,992 direct interactions with individuals in need. They transported 597 people, including 185 women, to emergency shelters. Additionally, the organisation handed out 1,115 warm clothing items, sleeping bags, and other essentials. Berlin maintained 1,250 emergency overnight shelter spaces throughout the cold period. Every available spot remained occupied, reflecting the high number of people seeking refuge from freezing temperatures.
The winter relief efforts in Berlin provided vital aid to thousands. Shelters operated at full capacity, while outreach teams distributed essential supplies and transported vulnerable individuals to safety. No citywide total of those supported across all organisations was reported.
