Guided Tours for Dementia Patients at Schloss Charlottenburg - Berlin's Charlottenburg Palace Launches Sensory Tours for Dementia Patients
Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin has introduced special sensory tours for people living with dementia. These guided visits aim to engage multiple senses while exploring the historic site. Around 65,000 Berliners currently live with the condition, making such initiatives increasingly important for inclusion and support.
The tours are a collaborative effort between the palace and the Malteser aid organisation. Each session lasts 60 minutes and focuses on the life of Queen Sophie Charlotte. An actress leads visitors through selected rooms before guiding them into the palace gardens.
Participants can take part in activities like a fan dance, designed to spark memories and encourage interaction. The programme also includes sensory experiences at Britz Garden, Berlin Zoo, and the Natural History Museum. Four dates are scheduled for this year: April 14, May 19, September 22, and November 3.
The tours are structured to stimulate recall, boost engagement, and help maintain cognitive abilities. By using touch, sound, and movement, they create a supportive environment for those affected by dementia.
The sensory tours provide a structured way for people with dementia to connect with history and culture. With multiple dates and locations available, the programme offers regular opportunities for participation. Organisers hope the initiative will continue to grow, supporting more individuals across Berlin.
