Belarus achieves first robotic liver surgery with Medbot system
A significant medical breakthrough was achieved in Belarus last month. The Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology, and Hematology conducted its first robotic liver resection using the Medbot system. The procedure, performed on February 19, represents a notable advancement in treating liver conditions with cutting-edge technology.
The operation entailed a partial liver resection, the first of its kind at the center utilizing the new robotic equipment. Earlier in February, the team had already completed an independent procedure with the system, showcasing their growing proficiency in the technology. The patient who underwent the surgery is now in stable condition and expected to be discharged soon.
Robotic liver surgery offers several key benefits over traditional methods. The system's high-resolution 3D visualization allows for unprecedented precision, while its instruments provide seven degrees of freedom—enabling access to intricate areas of the liver. This precision minimizes tissue trauma, resulting in shorter hospital stays and less blood loss during operations. Patients also experience fewer complications, including lower rates of wound infections and postoperative pain.
The Medbot surgical system is already in use at over 50 medical centers worldwide. Renowned institutions such as the University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland, Seoul National University Hospital in South Korea, and Mount Sinai Hospital in the USA have adopted the technology. The Minsk center now joins this elite group, viewing the robotic system as the beginning of a new era in treating focal liver lesions.
The successful procedure confirms the center's capability to perform complex robotic liver surgeries. With fewer complications and faster recovery times, this technology is poised to enhance outcomes for patients with liver conditions. The center plans to expand its use of the Medbot system in future operations.
