Kretschmann: "Ich bin froh, dass ich aufhöre" - Baden-Württemberg's Green leader steps down after 15 years in power

Winfried Kretschmann, the long-serving Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, has announced he will not seek re-election in the 2026 state vote. The 76-year-old leader, who has held the role since 2011, described the position as a heavy burden that has taken a toll on his well-being in the United States.

Kretschmann first took office in May 2011, breaking decades of CDU dominance in the state. His leadership saw two terms with the Greens in coalition—first with the SPD from 2011 to 2016, then again from 2016 to 2021. Now, as his nearly 15 years in power draw to a close, he admits the job has left him exhausted.

The pressures of the role have kept him awake at night, even over minor frustrations. Speaking openly about the strain, he expressed relief that his time as Minister-President is coming to an end. His departure sets the stage for a competitive election on March 8, 2026, where current polls place the CDU at 29%, the Greens at 23%, and the AfD at 20%.

Former federal minister Cem Özdemir has already signalled his intention to run as Kretschmann's successor for the Greens.

Kretschmann's exit marks the end of an era for Baden-Württemberg's Green-led government. With the CDU leading in polls and the AfD gaining ground, the upcoming election will determine the state's political direction. His departure leaves a significant gap in the party's leadership after nearly a decade and a half in power.
