Baden-Württemberg's €8M Medicell Project Aims to Revolutionize Medical Micro-Batteries

Baden-Württemberg is set to launch Medicell, a new research project focused on rechargeable micro-batteries. The initiative aims to develop ultra-compact lithium-ion batteries for wearable medical devices, including hearing aids and insulin pumps. Funding of around €8 million will come from the state's Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The project will officially begin in March 2026 and run for three years. It will be led by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Ulm, with backing from institutions in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, as well as a company based in Ellwangen. As of March 19, 2026, only the core partners have been confirmed, though more firms from mechanical engineering and medical technology are expected to join.

Baden-Württemberg sees battery research as a crucial factor in economic growth. The state aims to strengthen its position as a high-tech hub through initiatives like Medicell. Beyond medical applications, the project's findings may also support industrial uses and emerging technologies.

Medicell will focus on advancing micro-battery technology for healthcare devices. The €8 million investment reflects the state's commitment to innovation in energy storage. If successful, the project could expand into other sectors, further boosting Baden-Württemberg's technological leadership.
