Baden-Württemberg pharmacies abandon strike after legal intervention
Pharmacies in Baden-Württemberg will no longer close on March 23 after the State Pharmacy Association reversed its call for a strike. The decision follows a ruling by the Social Ministry declaring the planned protest unlawful.
Originally, around 50 of 61 pharmacies in Karlsruhe had intended to shut their doors for the day. The Social Ministry blocked the move, refusing to grant any exemptions for closures. Under a general decree, pharmacies could legally stay closed for the rest of the day if they opened for just three hours—but this option was rejected.
The State Pharmacy Association has now urged members to show support in different ways. Suggestions include wearing high-visibility vests, setting up information stands, or distributing flyers outside. The association also recommended inviting local press to raise awareness of the protest.
With the strike cancelled, pharmacies must remain open as usual. The association's alternative proposals aim to keep the protest visible without breaking the law. The Social Ministry's decision ensures no disruptions to pharmacy services on March 23.
