Farmers in Distress - Initiative for Desperate Farmers - Baden-Württemberg fights farmer suicides with new crisis support programme

Baden-Württemberg is taking action to address a growing crisis in its farming communities. After a series of suicides among farmers and vintners, the state's Ministry of Agriculture has launched a new support programme. Trained advisors, known as Kümmerer, will now offer practical help and a listening ear to those struggling under immense pressure.

The move comes as reports highlight alarmingly high suicide rates in the agricultural sector. While no official nationwide statistics exist, organisations like the Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft (DLG) and suicide prevention groups warn of a severe problem—particularly in Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg. Farmers here face relentless financial strain, gruelling hours, and the constant demand to be available around the clock.

One farmer, Stefan Leichenauer, experienced burnout and suicidal thoughts due to the overwhelming demands of his work. His case is not unique. Many in the industry grapple with debt, legal hurdles, and a public image that often fails to recognise their hardships. The *Kümmerer* will act as a first point of contact for those in distress. They will connect farmers with debt counselling, emergency farm assistance, and guidance on succession planning. Demand for their services is already high, with two or three calls for help arriving each week. Baden-Württemberg is leading the way by allocating around €350,000 to fund these advisors, setting a precedent for other states. At the national level, the Agricultural Ministers' Conference will soon propose a motion to collect nationwide data on the mental health of farmers and vintners. The aim is to better understand the scale of the problem and shape future support measures.

The new initiative marks a direct response to the extreme pressures facing farmers today. With financial burdens, isolation, and unrelenting workloads pushing many to breaking point, the Kümmerer programme offers immediate, hands-on support. The state's investment and the push for national data collection signal a growing recognition of the urgent need for change.
