**Wels.** Food researcher Julian Weghuber from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria receives the Christian Doppler Innovation Award 2024.

Food researcher Julian Weghuber is honored with the 2024 Research Prize for Innovation by the **Christian Doppler Research Society (CDG)**. This award is one of the most highly endowed prizes for applied research in Austria, with a prize money of 40,000 euros.

Weghuber is the program and research director at the **University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria** and is internationally active in the field of food technology and nutrition. His research focuses on the effects of plant-based ingredients, specifically secondary bioactive substances. These substances serve plants not for survival, but as attractants or for defense against predators. Many of these substances are considered health-promoting for humans and animals. The majority of these medically relevant plant substances are still scientifically unexplored.

Research at the Josef Ressel Center

As part of the **Josef Ressel Center (JRC) for phytogenic active ingredient research**, which completed its work last year, research was conducted with the corporate partners Agromed Austria, Delacon Biotechnik, and PM International AG on the molecular mechanisms of action. JRCs belong to the most important research groups at Austrian universities of applied sciences and receive up to five years of funding from the CDG (more below).

Weghuber continues his research in new projects, such as the **JRC for Innovative Bioavailability Research**. According to a press release from the FH OO, he sees the prize money as recognition of his previous scientific achievements. A successful product based on Weghuber's research is a drink called "Fit-line C-Balance", which stabilizes blood sugar levels and supports carbohydrate metabolism.

CDG celebrates anniversary

The Christian Doppler Research Society celebrates its 30th anniversary this year: Scientists work together with companies in Christian Doppler Labs and Josef Ressel Centers on projects that are co-financed by the public and private sectors; the research units of the society have so far produced around 5,300 peer-reviewed publications and over 130,000 citations. The public funding body is the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism, as well as the Austrian National Foundation for Research, Technology and Development.

The **University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria** with locations in Hagenberg, Linz, Steyr, and Wels offers a total of 75 bachelor's and master's programs, including 32 part-time programs.
