Austria's Hunger Winter Campaign Fights Rising Food Poverty Crisis

Food poverty in Austria affects around 1.1 million people, or 12% of the population. The Samaritan Federation has now launched the Hunger Winter campaign to highlight the growing issue and encourage public support. Free food parcels are already being distributed to those in need, but more help is required to keep the initiative running. The Hunger Winter campaign aims to raise awareness about the struggles faced by vulnerable groups, including single parents, unemployed individuals, and single-person households. Many cannot afford balanced meals, often skipping food or relying on cheap, processed options. Over time, poor nutrition can lead to serious health problems like obesity, diabetes, and mental health difficulties.

To reach a wider audience, the campaign will display donation appeals on the façade of Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier. A donation box will also be placed at the MQ Infopoint for direct contributions. Actors Cornelius Obonya and Günther Paal have lent their voices to the effort, urging people to support the cause. The Samaritan Federation currently hands out 600 free food parcels each month. These contain essentials such as long-life foods, hygiene products, and fresh produce. The *Samaritan Food Box* initiative began with funding from the Social Ministry but now depends entirely on public donations to continue. Contributions can be made via the organisation’s website (samariterwien.at/armvent) or through bank transfers.

The campaign seeks to address a pressing issue affecting over a million Austrians. Without further donations, the distribution of food parcels may face cutbacks. The Samaritan Federation has provided clear ways for the public to contribute and support those struggling with food poverty.
