Assam rolls out free HPV vaccines to shield 3.6 lakh girls from cervical cancer

Assam has launched a major health campaign to protect young girls from cervical cancer. The initiative, introduced on Saturday, will provide free HPV vaccinations to 14-year-olds across the state. Officials aim to reach around 3.6 lakh girls through the programme.

The National HPV Vaccination Campaign began at the Mother and Child Hospital of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bhangagarh. Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi attended the launch event.

The drive is part of the National Health Mission, organised with the Directorate of Health Services (Family Welfare), Assam. Its goal is to prevent cervical cancer by immunising girls against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

The campaign marks Assam's first statewide effort to combat cervical cancer through vaccination. With a target of 3.6 lakh girls, the programme will focus on early protection against HPV. The launch event at GMCH signalled the start of a coordinated health push across the region.
