A groundbreaking ceremony has marked the start of major expansions at the Asbury Hospice House in Hattiesburg. The project, funded by a $3 million donation, will add new family spaces, play areas, and an enlarged pharmacy. Leaders say the upgrades will create a more peaceful setting for end-of-life care. The expansion work began around three weeks ago after securing the necessary funding. The plans include a larger family area, dedicated children's play spaces, and a pavilion for special family gatherings. An onsite pharmacy will also be expanded to better serve patients and visitors.
Martha Dearman, executive director of the Forrest Health Foundation, spoke at the groundbreaking event. She highlighted the importance of providing compassion, dignity, and space for meaningful moments during difficult times. The project is set to finish in spring 2027. The upgrades will transform the hospice into a more supportive environment for patients and their loved ones. Construction is now underway, with completion expected in less than three years. The foundation has not released details on whether the expansion will increase the number of care beds.
