Almaty hospital adopts cutting-edge endoscopic spinal surgery techniques

Almaty Central City Clinical Hospital has introduced modern endoscopic treatment for degenerative spinal diseases. The new approach aims to improve care for patients while reducing recovery times. Foreign experts recently led a master class to train local specialists in the technique. Kazakhstan conducts between 3,000 and 5,000 spinal surgeries each year. Currently, only 7–9% of these procedures use endoscopic methods. The adoption of this advanced technology seeks to expand access to high-tech medical care for Almaty residents and the surrounding region.

During a recent master class, four patients with degenerative spinal conditions—including herniated discs—underwent endoscopic procedures. The operations were performed under the guidance of Chinese neurosurgeons Su Guo and Shahik. Their involvement was part of an ongoing effort to share expertise and enhance the skills of Kazakhstani medical professionals. Marat Pashimov, head of Almaty’s Public Health Department, attended the session. Patients treated with the new method reported significant pain relief. They also experienced shorter hospital stays and faster rehabilitation compared to traditional open surgery. The technique reduces trauma, postoperative discomfort, and overall recovery time.

The introduction of endoscopic spinal surgery in Almaty marks a shift toward less invasive treatment options. The master class demonstrated immediate benefits, including reduced pain and quicker recoveries for patients. Local specialists will continue training to expand the use of this technology across the region.
