Alexandra Knauer Wins 2026 Pittcon Heritage Award Despite Visa Denial
Alexandra Knauer, managing partner of KNAUER Wissenschaftliche Geräte GmbH, has been named the 2026 Pittcon Heritage Award winner. The prestigious prize honours her contributions to instrumental analytics and laboratory sciences. However, she was unable to attend the ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, after her U.S. visa was denied.
In a video address, Knauer thanked the organisers and reflected on the company's latest achievements. These include the launch of a modular oligonucleotide synthesizer and the creation of a 3-in-1 LC detector system.
The Pittcon Heritage Award celebrates individuals who have made a lasting impact on scientific instrumentation. David A. Cole, CEO of the Science History Institute, commended Knauer's leadership, innovation, and commitment to social responsibility.
Knauer dedicated the award to her late father, Dr. Herbert Knauer, who co-founded the Berlin-based company in 1962. His introduction of the first modular HPLC system in 1974 set the foundation for KNAUER's growth. Over the decades, the firm expanded into UHPLC, osmometry, gas chromatography, and software for chromatography. Under Alexandra Knauer's leadership since around 2010, the company has entered new fields. These include biopharmaceutical purification, food safety testing, and environmental research. The business now also produces GMP-compliant systems, automation tools, and technologies for lipid nanoparticle production. Recent developments, such as the 3-in-1 LC detector and oligonucleotide synthesizer, mark further milestones. Since Knauer could not travel to the U.S., Dr. Markus Fuchs—a 30-year employee—collected the award on her behalf. The KNAUER team later celebrated with a special breakfast hosted by management. As part of the honour, Knauer will be inducted into the Pittcon Hall of Fame.
The award highlights Knauer's role in advancing scientific instrumentation and expanding KNAUER's global reach. The company continues to develop new technologies while maintaining its focus on automation and regulatory compliance. Her leadership ensures the firm remains at the forefront of laboratory innovation.
