Weekends@MIT continues to offer students a lively mix of evening activities, running for over two decades. The student-led initiative, backed by the Division of Student Life, provides substance-free events every Friday and Saturday night. This semester's lineup includes everything from pupusas and chess tournaments to mocktail workshops and paint nights.
The program began more than 20 years ago as a way to bring students together through weekend activities. Today, a team within the Wellbeing Ambassadors program organises the events, with input and ideas coming directly from the student body. Collaborations with clubs and groups are common, as organisations can apply for funding to host their own Saturday gatherings.
All events take place in the MIT Wellbeing Lab between 9 and 11 p.m., open to both undergraduates and postgraduates. Past activities have ranged from yoga and trivia to themed nights like Spooky Skate and waffle-making sessions. In the last fall semester alone, over 2,000 students attended Friday night events, many of which were designed as casual drop-in experiences.
A weekly newsletter keeps thousands of students informed about upcoming programs. This semester's schedule includes pupusas, a blitz chess tournament, craft night, movie screenings with waffles, mocktails with latte art, and a Bob Ross-inspired paint night. The initiative remains focused on creating inclusive, engaging spaces for students to unwind and connect.
Weekends@MIT has grown into a well-established part of campus life, offering consistent weekend entertainment without alcohol. The initiative's long-term success reflects its student-driven approach and the ongoing support from the Division of Student Life. With a mix of new and returning activities, the program continues to draw large crowds each semester.
