Sakhalin Oblast bets on wellness tourism to double visitor numbers

Sakhalin Oblast is set to transform into a major health and wellness destination. Authorities have unveiled plans to expand tourism by blending thermal springs, active holidays, and preventive medicine. The region aims to double its annual visitor numbers while boosting Russia's tourism economy.

A recent strategic session led by Governor Valery Limarenko outlined a new leisure concept for the area. The focus will be on health resort tourism, combining skiing, coastal trips, and mineral baths with medical consultations. Visitors will receive tailored health advice alongside their stays.

The Kuril Islands will play a central role, with thermal spring bathing becoming a key feature of nearly every tour. A standout attraction will be a unique sanatorium built around a rare arsenic-rich mineral spring, known for benefits to the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Such springs are found in only a few places worldwide, including Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, Japan's Beppu, and Germany's Bad Dürkheim. Infrastructure development is a priority, with plans for new hotels, trails, and services. The goal is to attract more visitors from the Far East and beyond while improving life for local residents. Governor Limarenko stressed the importance of creating a well-rounded experience for both tourists and Sakhalin's population. The push aligns with President Vladimir Putin's target to raise tourism's contribution to GDP from 2.5% to 5%. Sakhalin Oblast is positioned to lead this growth, aiming to increase its current 300,000 annual visitors to 600,000.

The expansion will centre on wellness tourism, offering a mix of relaxation, outdoor activities, and medical care. If successful, the project could establish Sakhalin Oblast as a leading destination for health-focused travel. The region's unique mineral springs and new infrastructure are expected to draw visitors while supporting broader economic goals.
