From a young age: Saarland focuses on healthy nutrition - Saarland's Free Fruit Program Nourishes 32,000 Kids with EU Backing
Saarland is expanding its efforts to encourage healthier eating among children and teenagers. The regional government has confirmed it will keep providing free fresh fruit and vegetables to thousands of young people in schools and daycare centres. Funding for the programme has reached nearly €900,000, with support from both the state and the EU.
Currently, 32,200 children and adolescents across 244 schools receive 200 grams of fresh produce every week. The scheme is part of the EU School Fruit Scheme, with Saarland contributing nearly €600,000 and the EU adding €256,000. An extra 1,680 children from disadvantaged areas also benefit, thanks to €50,000 in funding from the Ministry of Social Affairs.
Beyond free produce, the government is pushing for broader changes. Minister Petra Berg has highlighted the need for regular healthy eating habits. Plans include training specialists, distributing educational materials, and running cooking classes. Schools and daycare centres are also being encouraged to set up their own gardens, helping children learn about regional and sustainable food.
A nutrition conference is set to take place this year, bringing together institutions that shape young people's diets. The Saarland Nutrition Prize will again reward creative and effective approaches to promoting healthy eating.
The programme's continuation means more children will have access to fresh fruit and vegetables at no cost. With funding secured and new initiatives underway, the focus remains on building long-term healthy eating habits. The government's investment aims to support both nutrition and education across the region.
