Mississippi reports first child flu death as 2025-2026 season begins
Mississippi has recorded its first pediatric death from influenza this flu season. The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) confirmed the tragic case as the 2025-2026 season begins. Officials are now urging residents to take precautions against the virus. Flu activity in Mississippi usually reaches its highest levels between January and March. Since the 2008-09 season, the state has reported 28 child deaths linked to flu complications. This latest fatality marks the first of the current season.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Renia Dotson stressed the importance of vaccination for everyone aged six months and older. She noted that flu shots take up to two weeks to build full immunity. The MSDH offers free vaccinations for children under 18 at County Health Departments, while insured adults can access them through doctors, pharmacies, and retail centres. Underinsured or uninsured adults can also receive shots at MSDH clinics. To limit the spread of flu, health officials recommend covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow. They also advise staying home when ill and washing hands frequently. These measures aim to reduce transmission during the peak winter months.
The MSDH continues to monitor flu cases across the state. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent severe illness and death. Residents are encouraged to act now to protect themselves and others before flu activity intensifies.
