Thuringia is expanding its support for children's physical development through a dedicated movement coaching program. Launched in 2022, the initiative helps youngsters aged five to ten build athletic skills, teamwork, and fair play in schools and daycare centres.

The program began as a response to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Its goal was to re-engage children in physical activity and structured sports. Since its start, twelve movement coaches have been working across different regions in Thuringia.

Each week, nearly 3,000 children take part in the sessions. The initiative has also helped local sports clubs recruit over 1,000 new members. Currently, 25 clubs are involved, though demand from others remains high due to limited availability.

To sustain the program, the state has committed €500,000 in funding for both 2026 and 2027. Coaches focus on teaching fundamental movement skills while encouraging teamwork and sportsmanship among participants.

The movement coaching program has already connected thousands of children with sports clubs and physical activities. With continued funding, the initiative aims to reach even more youngsters in the coming years. Clubs and schools will keep working together to provide structured opportunities for children's development.
