Project coaches move 3,000 children weekly - Thuringia's €500K Boost Keeps Kids Moving with Expert Coaches

Thuringia is expanding its support for children's physical development with a major funding boost. The state has allocated €500,000 per year for 2026 and 2027 to continue its Bewegungscoaching initiative. This programme, launched in 2022, helps young children recover from the lack of activity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The initiative began in 2022 to improve motor skills and encourage sports participation among children aged five to ten. Movement coaches now work across Thuringia, visiting schools and daycare centres weekly. Their lessons focus on basic athletic skills, teamwork, and fair play.

Twelve coaches currently serve 25 sports clubs, reaching nearly 3,000 children each week. Since the programme started, clubs have gained over 1,000 new young members. Official reports confirm that 1,248 children joined organised sports through the scheme by 2025.

The extra funding ensures the project will keep running for at least two more years. Coaches will continue introducing children to different sports while building confidence in movement and physical activity.

The expanded budget will maintain the programme's reach and impact across Thuringia. Sports clubs and schools will keep benefiting from expert coaching, helping more children develop essential skills. The initiative's success in recruiting new members highlights its role in strengthening youth sports participation.
